A Simple Tool to Identify What Matters Most in Therapy
In therapy, everything may feel important—anxiety, relationships, trauma, stress, motivation—but it’s not always clear where to start. That’s why we created the “Let’s Set Priorities” Worksheet, a free, printable tool designed to help clients and clinicians quickly identify what needs attention right now.
This worksheet is a gentle, structured way to bring focus into therapy sessions. It empowers clients to reflect, prioritize, and create small, actionable steps toward change.
🧠 What’s Inside the Worksheet?
The Let’s Set Priorities worksheet helps you explore several areas of life and identify which ones feel most urgent. It includes five guided sections:
- Rate Areas of Life
Clients score how much things like mood, anxiety, relationships, or burnout are affecting them right now (from 0 = Not at All to 3 = Severe). - Pick 1–3 Priorities
Out of all the areas rated, they choose one to three that feel most important to work on immediately. - Visualize Improvement
They describe what “getting better” would look like for each chosen area in simple, hopeful language. - Barriers & Strengths
This section encourages insight into obstacles while highlighting personal strengths or supports that can help. - Choose a First Step
Clients name one small, realistic step they could take in the coming week to move forward.
🎯 Why Prioritization Matters in Therapy
Without clear focus, therapy can feel scattered or overwhelming. This worksheet helps both client and clinician:
- Pinpoint the most distressing issues
- Clarify realistic expectations for change
- Build a collaborative treatment plan
- Create space for small wins and early momentum
- Validate and track progress over time
When clients are invited to name what matters most, therapy becomes more aligned, responsive, and empowering.
👥 Who Should Use It?
The “Let’s Set Priorities” worksheet is ideal for:
- Clients who feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin
- Therapists seeking a structured intake or goal-setting tool
- Support groups looking to help members reflect and act intentionally
- Check-ins during treatment to reassess and shift focus if needed
It’s written in supportive, client-friendly language and can be used in therapy sessions, between visits, or during initial assessments.
